Psalms Group, Sunday August 9, 2020, 9 AM
Dear Psalm friends,
We will be focusing on chapter 14, “Creation,” in Open and Unafraid tomorrow at 9 am. We will use Psalm 95:1-7 as our invitatory psalm (invitation to worship) and also read Psalm 8. Both of these psalms are Hebrew hymns of praise, declaring praise for God’s infinite creative power and unique attention to humans made in his own image. Your lesson sheet is attached and will guide us in taking a deeper look at our Creator and his creation, especially ourselves and other humans.
We will soon be completing David Taylor’s book, Open and Unafraid. I’m grateful for the timing of its publication, just in time to accompany each of us in these almost 5 months of a pandemic. I hope your’ve enjoyed the reading as much as I have.
The next book will be using is Tim Keller’s The Songs of Jesus: A Year of Daily Devotions in the Psalms. We will ignore the calendar dates on each page and instead follow our Christ Church lectionary, reading the Psalms in order (mostly!) as usual. Tim Keller has written at least one page on every Psalm, in numerical order. We can easily use his readings to enrich our own daily reading and praying of the Psalms. Tammy tells me there are a few copies of Keller’s The Songs of Jesus in the Christ Church bookstore. I ordered my copy on Amazon. If you don’t yet own an ESV Study Bible, now may be the time to buy one for yourself.
If you’ve connected with Todd and Penna this week, you may already know that they are stepping out of our Sunday morning group now because they will attend church at 9:15 in order to care for grandchildren so that these children’s parents can go to church again. There’s a tough gap in our church for ages beyond three who don’t have childcare but tend to be too “active” to make it through our services. Sadly, that is impacting the Dexter family. They have added so much to our group, and we will miss them.
I look forward to “zooming” with each of you tomorrow at 9 am!
Grace and peace in Christ,
Toni
